The importance of effective career guidance goes unrecognised by many policy makers, though it should play a key role in the active labour market policies of OECD countries. Effective career guidance could also enable more people to lead satisfying and productive lives. Yet the national resources currently invested in this field are often not being used effectively. As the relationship between education and employment changes, individuals must make many more choices than in the past, as they try to plot a personal pathway through a complex maze of options. Skills will no longer last a lifetime, but must be added to, and updated in a process of lifelong learning. Good guidance is now essential for everyone. This report focuses on current innovations in career guidance in Austria, Canada, Finland, Italy, Japan, Mexico and Scotland.
